Newcastle United’s nine-game winning streak came to an end following a 4-1 defeat against AFC Bournemouth at St James’ Park.
Bruno Guimaraes equalised after Justin Kluivert handed the visitors the lead before the same player restored his side’s advantage on the brink of half-time.
The Cherries had a third goal ruled out by VAR on the hour-mark but Kluivert and Milos Kerkez weren’t to denied as United missed the chance to record a 10th straight win in all competitions for the first time in their entire history.
Fabian Schar returned from illness but had to settle for a place on the bench as Howe named an unchanged starting XI from the 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday.
A slow start by the Magpies was punished six minutes in when Kluivert was found in the penalty area unmarked to fire the ball past Martin Dubravka and into the bottom right corner.
Guimaraes dragged United level in the 25th minute after heading home Lewis Hall’s in-swinging corner. It was the Brazilian’s second goal of the campaign and his ninth goal involvement in 11 games.
But Guimaraes was soon at fault as the visitors re-took the lead. He lost out to Ouattara from Dan Burn’s pass before Kluivert received the ball on the edge of the box to shoot and make it 2-1.
Ouattara thought he had made it 3-1 on the hour-mark but the goal was ruled out VAR after the ball went out of play in the build-up.
But the visitors found a third as Kluivert beat Dubravka from distance to complete his hat-trick in stoppage time. And there was time for another as Milos Kerkez then added a fourth.
Howe’s side lost dismally without really testing Kepa Arrizabalga in the Cherries goal. That saw Alexander Isak’s run of scoring in eight consecutive Premier League games come to an end.
