Newcastle United player ratings vs Brighton: 'Stupid' Anthony Gordon as 7.5/10 gets highest mark

Newcastle United player ratings from the 2-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup.

Newcastle United exited the FA Cup with a 2-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion after extra-time.

Alexander Isak handed the Magpies the lead before Yankuba Minteh levels things up at the break. Anthony Gordon and Tariq Lamptety but saw red in the closing stages while Fabian Schar had a late winner ruled out for offside.

The fifth round tie went to extra-time and it was Danny Welbeck who netted six minutes from time.

Eddie Howe made six changes from the 2-0 defeat at Premier League leaders Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Alexander Isak and Joelinton were back from injury and straight back into the starting XI. Martin Dubravka, Kieran Trippier, Lewis Miley and Harvey Barnes also came into the team in place of Nick Pope, Lewis Hall, Joe Willock and Jacob Murphy.

Hall missed out with an ankle issue, which saw Tino Livramento move over to left-back.

And the 22-year-old had a major say on the opening goal when he was fouled by Yankuba Minteh in the box. Isak stepped up to fire the ball beyond Bart Verbruggen and claim his 22nd goal of the campaign.

Isak thought he had his and Newcastle’s second when he slotted in by Barnes, however the Swede’s celebrations were cut short by the offside flag.

Newcastle had looked set to go into half-time with a deserved lead until Minteh made amends for his penalty with a left-footed finish in front of the Gallowgate End.

Both sides pushed for a winner in normal time but Newcastle were dealt a major blow in the closing stages when Anthony Gordon was shown a straight red card for violent conduct. That will see the winger missed the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool in a fortnight’s time.

As extra-time approached, referee Anthony Taylor showed a second yellow card to Tariq Lamptey, making it 10 v 10.

An additional 30 minutes had looked to be avoided when Fabian Schar converted Bruno Guimaraes’ free-kick delivery in stoppage time, however the goal was ruled out by VAR for offside.

Brighton won the tie in the 114th minute when Welbeck scored.
