Newcastle United advanced into the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 3-1 victory over League Two side Bromley.
Eddie Howe’s side fell behind in the opening stages when Cameron Congreve curled the ball into the bottom corner. Lewis Miley then equalised before second-half goals from substitute Anthony Gordon and Will Osula sealed a eighth consecutive win in all competitions.
Howe made nine changes from Tuesday’s 2-0 Carabao Cup semi-final first leg win at Arsenal. Martin Dubravka and Joelinton remained in the starting XI, lining up alongside Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, Harvey Barnes, Matt Targett, Will Osula, Miguel Almiron, Lloyd Kelly, Sean Longstaff and Lewis Miley.
An FA Cup upset looked on when Congreve handed the visitors the lead in the eighth minute. Danny Imray then missed a big chance to make it 2-0 before Miley equalised via a stunning 25-yard strike on the quarter-hour mark.
Unhappy with what he witnessed in the first half, Howe brought on Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes off the bench and Gordon gave United the lead in the 49th minute when he sent Bromley goalkeeper Grant Smith the wrong way from the penalty spot.
The penalty was awarded after Matt Targett was chopped down by Ben Thompson in the box.
On the hour-mark, Newcastle found their all-important third goal when Osula cut inside on his left foot to fire the ball into the bottom corner. That was the striker’s first goal since joining from Sheffield United for an initial £10million in the summer.
Osula was shortly replaced by 17-year-old Trevan Sanusi, while Lewis Hall replaced Matt Targett at left-back. The Magpies saw out a eighth successive win with ease to advance into the fourth round of the FA Cup.

A sluggish start to the game, though he wasn’t the only one. Better in the second half. | Getty Images
