Newcastle United player ratings vs Manchester City: 'Relentless' 9/10 & 'sluggish' 6/10 in 1-1 draw

Newcastle United 1-1 Manchester City: Anthony Gordon’s penalty cancels out Josko Gvardiol’s first-half opener.

Newcastle United played out a 1-1 draw with Premier League champions Manchester City at St James’ Park.

Josko Gvardiol opened the scoring in the first-half before Anthony Gordon equalised from the penalty spot after being brought down by Ederson on the hour-mark.

Eddie Howe made three changes from the 3-1 defeat at Fulham, one of which was enforced as Alexander Isak missed out with a toe injury. Anthony Gordon led the line with Jacob Murphy, back in the starting XI, and Harvey Barnes either side.

Sandro Tonali was handed his first Premier League start in nearly a year as he partnered Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton in midfield. Lewis Hall was preferred to Lloyd Kelly at left-back in a back four of Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar and Dan Burn.

City, meanwhile, were without star duo Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne.

Newcastle battled well with the visitors in the first-half but their defence was breached in the 35th minute when Jack Grealish found Gvardiol in the box. The defender showed good skill to beat Burn and slot the ball into the bottom right corner.

Shortly after the restart, Newcastle were awarded a penalty following a foul by Ederson on Gordon, who was slipped in by Bruno Guimaraes. Gordon stepped up and converted to earn the hosts a deserved point.
