Newcastle United player ratings vs Wolves: 'Phenomenal' 9/10 but plenty of 5/10 & 6/10s in 2-1 win

Two goals inside the remaining 15 minutes saw Newcastle United come from behind to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Molineux.

The Magpies trailed through Mario Lemina’s 36th minute opener but completed a stunning comeback with Fabian Schar and substitute Harvey Barnes both scoring from long distance. Schar’s goal, which deflected over Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone via Craig Dawson’s head, arrived at a time when United had been struggling to create anything.

The result saw Eddie Howe’s side move up to 3rd in the Premier League table and maintain their unbeaten start, collecting 10 points from a possible 12.

Howe made three changes from the 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur before the international break. Fabian Schar - back from a three-match suspension - replaced Emil Krafth at centre-back, while Lewis Hall and Jacob Murphy were preferred ahead of Lloyd Kelly and Harvey Barnes. Meanwhile, Sandro Tonali had to settle for a place on the bench, despite his standout displays for Italy. Joe Willock returned to the matchday squad after a short-term thigh injury.

Newcastle made a positive start to the game and were denied the opener seven minutes in when Alexander Isak slipped in Murphy but Sam Johnstone was equal to the attempt. Anthony Gordon then went close in what would have been a goal of the season contender, beating Nelson Semedo and Yerson Mosquera on the right before his shot struck the post.

Wolves gradually grew into the game and took the lead in the 36th minute. Jorgen Strand Larsen outmuscled Dan Burn to find Lemina in the box, who fired home.

Howe made a triple sub at the break, introducing Barnes, Tonali and Willock. Chances were few and far between before Schar’s deflected effort levelled the scoreline in the 75th minute. Barnes then made it 2-1 with a stunning effort of his own as he cut inside on the right and fire the ball into the top corner.
