Newcastle United plot huge £2.5m Sunderland raid as Everton enter transfer race

Newcastle United could raid bitter rivals Sunderland for one of their brightest young propects.

Newcastle United are reportedly plotting a £2.5million bid to sign Chris Rigg from bitter rivals Sunderland.

The summer transfer window saw the Magpies bolster its academy ranks with the arrivals of highly-rated trio Alex Murphy, Charlie McArthur and Jude Smith.

And according to The Sun, 15-year-old midfielder Rigg is the latest name on academy bosses’ radar.

Rigg, who only turned 15 in June, is an England youth international - recently captaining the Three Lions against Italy - and has appeared for the Black Cats’ under-21s side this campaign.

Last season, Rigg starred for Sunderland’s under-18s and scored a free-kick in the club’s under-15s Super Floodlit Cup final win over Crystal Palace.

Rigg has been scouted by a number of clubs, with Everton pushing hard to sign the teenager in recent months. However, the Magpies hope to hold the advantage with Rigg and his family Newcastle fans.

It’s claimed United are weighing up a bid for the midfielder.
