Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy is likely to return against Liverpool next weekend.

Newcastle United are set to welcome back Jacob Murphy for next Sunday’s Premier League clash at home to Liverpool (kick-off 4:30pm).

When Eddie Howe released his Magpies teamsheet at 7pm on Saturday evening, the 28-year-old was surprisingly missing from the matchday squad against Manchester City.

However, the reason for his absence quickly became apparent with the winger accompanying his partner in hospital as she gave birth. Murphy posted a photo on Instagram of him watching the match from hospital as Julian Alvarez’s first-half strike inflicted a narrow 1-0 defeat on Newcastle.

On Murphy’s absence, Howe said: “His partner was due to give birth before the game so he didn’t travel. I don’t know what has happened during the game but we wish him and his family very well.”

The former Norwich City man’s impact off the bench was missed by Howe as United failed to find a second-half equaliser. He is, however, expected to return in time for Liverpool’s visit to St James’ Park.

One player Newcastle could be without is Joelinton after he limped off on the hour-mark at the Etihad Stadium.

Asked about the Brazilian’s injury, Howe replied: “No, no news. I know what you know,” Howe said. “He didn’t move well when he came off the pitch. Fingers crossed he’s OK. “

Joe Willock (hamstring), Emil Krafth (ACL) and Javier Manquillo (groin) won’t return.
