Standing in their way is Brentford, who got the better of the Magpies just over a week ago. The big difference, however, is home advantage. And Eddie Howe’s side love playing at St James’ Park.
“We have such a powerful force at home with our supporters as long as we create that positivity in our performance which we did against Leicester,” Howe said during his pre-match press conference. “When you play these cup games, the one-off games, the opportunity of a semi-final we hope that is something that can lean the game in our favour.
“But it’s going to come down to us executing our game plan well and continuing where we left off against Leicester.”
Howe typically gave nothing away in regards to his team selection. With Ipswich Town to come on Saturday and then Aston Villa a few days later, rotation will likely be key.
Newcastle will be without Sean Longstaff, who is suspended after receiving yellow cards against AFC Wimbledon and Chelsea in the previous rounds. That will see Lewis Miley recalled to the squad having spent the last few weeks representing the under-21s.
Meanwhile, Sven Botman remains unavailable, despite playing an hour for the under-21s on Monday in his first game since recovering from an ACL injury. Jamaal Lascelles, Nick Pope, Callum Wilson and Emil Krafth are also ruled out.
