The Blyth-born defender was forced to withdraw in the second-half against Birmingham City last weekend because of a groin issue. While Burn remains a doubt for today, Eddie Howe confirmed positive news.
Howe said: "The initial outlook on Dan wasn't positive, but he had a scan and the scan was good. He's improved a lot very quickly this week so he'll be very close this weekend."
The Magpies are without Sven Botman, who is sidelined with a knee issue. Being without Burn would leave Howe’s side without a recognised left-sided defender.
But in better news, Newcastle are expected to welcome back Anthony Gordon after he missed the visit to Birmingham with a quad injury.
"(Gordon) should be fine,” Howe said. “He's trained this week, no problems. It was a thigh problem, but he responded well to treatment over the weekend, and he's trained.”
United head to the Etihad Stadium having not won there since 2014. Both Newcastle and Man City are level on 41 points, with Pep Guardiola’s side suffering a big dip in form this campaign.
Howe said: “I think they've been sensational and so consistent for so many seasons, which is so difficult to do at this level because of the standard of the teams. And I think that's what we've seen with the standard of the Premier League, congesting in its force, really. Every team is very difficult to play against.
“We found that recently in a couple of home games. If you drop by 1%, you can get beaten. Every game is very difficult. Nothing's given to you. I think it's been great for the Premier League that it's like that because you never know what's going to happen when you go to a stadium now, any stadium. And I think it's producing a really entertaining Premier League this year.
“But Manchester City are still a very, very good team. I think statistically at home, they've still been very strong. So for me, they're still the benchmark and we have to try and produce our best performance to try and get something from this match.”
