Newcastle United predicted XI v Bournemouth: £80m selection blow & Harvey Barnes decision made

Newcastle United predicted XI v Bournemouth: Callum Wilson blow as Eddie Howe makes Harvey Barnes decision.

Eddie Howe will be forced into at least one change to his Newcastle United starting XI for this afternoon's Premier League clash at home to AFC Bournemouth.

The Magpies' boss confirmed on Friday that Wilson has undergone surgery on a pectoral muscle injury and is expected to miss the majority of the campaign.

“It was a really strange injury," explained Howe. "He got in a tussle with the centre-back right the end of the [Nottingham Forest] game. Initially, just from my view I thought he must have hurt his shoulder but it wasn’t, it was a muscle in his pec.

"We had it scanned and we hoped initially he could carry on and he felt good actually, he felt functionally fine and was moving his arm at full strength.

"But when he went to see a specialist, I think it was apparent quite early that he needed it operated on and he’s having that operation as we speak.”

Howe also said Alexander Isak 'probably won't' feature against the Cherries, although he is "very, very, very close" to returning from his latest groin issue which has kept him out for two weeks.

That means Newcastle could be without a recognised striker this afternoon, and perhaps that means a first start since September for £38million summer signing Harvey Barnes with Anthony Gordon very much United's back up striker.
