Newcastle United return to Premier League action just three days after their 2-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.
The Magpies headed to Selhurst Park on the back of a 10-day break after beating Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 at St James’ Park. But they couldn’t repeat their efforts in South London and succumbed to two Jean Philippe-Matata goals.
Eddie Howe produced a tactical masterclass against Spurs, unleashing an unseen 3-4-3 formation, but sticking with the same formula - and players - didn’t work twice. Against the Blades, the Toon boss must decide whether to stick again, or possibly revert back his favoured 4-3-3.
Prior to the defeat to Palace, Newcastle had come into form after going four matches unbeaten. Wins against West Ham United, Fulham and Spurs, and a drawing with Everton, has propelled United back into European qualification with destiny in their own hands.
It is likely 7th position, where they sit currently, will be enough for a return to Europe.
There are five games remaining, starting with bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United on Saturday (kick-off 3pm). Defeat for Chris Wilder’s side on Tyneside would seal their relegation after just one season back in the top-flight.
