Newcastle United have been credited with an interest in Flamengo’s highly-rated midfielder Victor Hugo.

Brazilian outlet Bolavip have suggested the Magpies are prepared to make an offer for the 18-year-old ‘before the competition actually arrives’.

That competition is said to be provided by La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, who have both watched the youngster in action in recent months.

Hugo only broke into the Flamengo senior setup earlier this year but has made a big impact, scoring four goals and creating two assists in 24 appearances.

The Brazilian market has reportedly been explored by United in recent months and the Magpies have been linked with several players from some of the country’s biggest clubs.

The likes of Santos prospect Angelo Gabriel and Flamengo striker Gabriel Barbosa have both reportedly been watched by Newcastle representatives.

Hugo is said to be the latest Brazilian star on their radar and the report suggests United are willing to pay £10million up front with a further £2million in add-ons to secure a deal for a player that has a release clause of £100million written into his current deal with the Maracana club.

Hugo has also been linked with a move to Ligue 1 side Lyon, who are said to have identified the midfielder as a replacement for reported United target Lucas Paqueta.

Paqueta is the subject of a £33.7million offer from West Ham United as they look to see off competition from a number of clubs to bring the Brazil international to the Premier League.
