Bruno Guimaraes is ready to come straight back into Newcastle United’s starting XI for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Manchester United.

The Brazilian hasn’t played since the Magpies secured their place at Wembley via a 3-1 aggregate win over Premier League rivals Southampton on January 31.

Guimaraes, of course, was sent off during the second-leg at St James’ Park and was instructed to serve a three-match suspension. Fortunately, the midfielder returns just in time for the final.

"He’s OK, he’s good,” said head coach Eddie Howe. “He’s been really disappointed to miss the last few games and has felt very frustrated not to help the team. But he’s back and in a good place."

The return of Guimaraes is a major boost for Howe’s side, who have failed to win any of the six matches the 24-year-old has missed during the 2022-23 campaign so far.

Kieran Trippier, speaking at Tuesday’s pre-Wembley media say, summed up Guimaraes’ importance.

“Bruno’s massive,” said the England right-back. “What he brings to the team is quality on and off the ball. The lads have missed him – of course we have – but we’ve dealt with it well.

“Longy (Sean Longstaff) has been unbelievable all season, and players have stepped up, and that’s what you need. There are going to be injuries and suspensions during the season, and you need everyone to be ready if they are called upon.

“I’ve been in the situation before where I’ve not been starting, and I’ve been called upon for England, and I need to be ready. Everyone will get their chance at some point this season. You look at the goalkeeper situation – everyone has to be ready.”
