Newcastle United £80m double injury doubt v Bournemouth as key man suffers 'freak' issue

Newcastle United injury update ahead of the Premier League clash against AFC Bournemouth at St James' Park.

Newcastle United could be without a recognised senior striker when they welcome AFC Bournemouth to St James' Park this Saturday afternoon.

The Magpies beat Nottingham Forest 3-2 at the weekend but were dealt a new injury concern in the closing stages when Callum Wilson placed his arm into a makeshift sling after getting into a tangle with a Forest defender.

United boss Eddie Howe said after the game: “Slight concern for us after the game. His shoulder is fine  but there looks to be a problem with one of the muscles in his arm. We’re hopeful it’s not serious but at this moment we don’t know.”

Ahead of the visit of Wilson's former club, Mail Online has provided an update. They claim the 31-year-old has a suffered a pectoral injury, the chest muscle that connects to the bones of the upper arm and shoulder, and is a doubt for Saturday.

After what Howe described as "freak" injuries for Jacob Murphy and Nick Pope after the pair dislocated their shoulders, Wilson's injury will also leave the 46-year-old scratching his head.

Newcastle's medical team hope they will be able to manage the pain and allow him to feature against the Cherries but a decision won't be made until later in the week.

If ruled out, that could see Anthony Gordon lead the line once again with Alexander Isak also a doubt. The Swede has missed the last two matches with a recurring groin issue and speaking on Friday, Howe said the 24-year-old had "no fixed return date".
