Newcastle United release club statement after what happened to Bruno Guimaraes & Joe Willock v Arsenal

Joe Willock and Bruno Guimaraes were both subject to racist abuse on social media following Newcastle United’s 1-0 over Arsenal.

Both players found themselves at the centre of contentious moments during the game, with Willock keeping the ball in play and leading to Anthony Gordon’s goal and Guimaraes clashing with Jorginho in a way that could have seen him sent off.

Willock shared two of the racist messages he received to his Instagram story after the game alongside a photo of a ‘show racism the red card’ banner at St James’ Park.

The 23-year-old played 78 times for Arsenal after progressing through the clubs academy before moving permanently to Newcastle for £25million in 2021.

Bruno Guimaraes posted to his Instagram celebrating United’s win. “What a result! Big performance for everyone and more 3 points at home 🏠 😜🖤🤍,” he wrote.

But in the comment section the Brazilian was met with negative comments and racist abuse.

Following the incidents Newcastle United have released a statement, which read: ‘Newcastle United strongly condemns racist abuse sent to Bruno Guimarães and Joe Willock via social media following Saturday’s victory over Arsenal.

‘Our message is clear. There is no room for racism in football or society.

‘We are providing support to Bruno and Joe and will work with relevant authorities and social media platforms to identify those responsible so that they can be held to account.’
