Newcastle United remain interested in signing Christian Eriksen this summer as a decision over his next club looms.

The 30-year-old has attracted interest from a number of Premier League clubs since the end of last season after completing a remarkable return to football with Brentford.

The West London outfit handed the Denmark star the opportunity to resume his playing career, seven months after he suffered a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020.

Eriksen, who marked his comeback against Newcastle in February, registered four assists and scored once in his 11 appearances.

Naturally, Thomas Frank’s side want Eriksen to extend his initial six-month contract but accept that the midfielder is considering other options.

The national media has painted the picture that it is a two-horse race between Brentford and Manchester United to land Eriksen - but Newcastle remain in the race.

NewcastleWorld has learned as recently as the last 24 hours that lines of contact between Newcastle and Eriksen’s representatives remain very much open.

Speaking about his future earlier this month, Eriksen told Bold.dk: “There are many criteria and many different things inside such a decision.

“Sometimes it goes fast in football, other times a little slower. You are not in control of it yourself. I have to make the best decision and not rush anything through.

“My phone stays on, but I also know my agent well enough to know that he only calls if there’s something exciting.”

Eriksen is unlikely to wait much longer to make a decision on his next club with a number of teams - including Newcastle - returning for pre-season training later this week.
