Callum Wilson has reportedly signed a two-year contract extension with Newcastle United.

The 30-year-old signed a four-year deal when he arrived from Bournemouth for £20million in September 2020.

And according to The Athletic, the Magpies No.9 has penned new and improved terms that puts him in line with the club’s highest earners.

Wilson has scored 23 goals in 48 Premier League appearances for United, although injuries have restricted the striker from increasing that tally.

Most recently, Wilson missed five games in all competitions with a hamstring injury before returning - and scoring - in Saturday’s 4-1 win at Fulham.

When available, Wilson has regularly found the net for United. And Eddie Howe, who first coached the player at Bournemouth, is a huge advocate.

Plans have been put in place behind the scenes, namely to his training schedule, to give Wilson the best chance of remaining fit.

Asked about Wilson’s strong mentality recently, Howe said: “I think it’s very internal. It’s in-built in him.

“Where that comes, childhood, football experiences - I don’t know. That drive and determination I see in training every day.

“I know when he takes to the training pitch or matchday pitch, he’s very driven to give his best, not just for himself but the team.”

Alongside his playing abilities, The Athletic adds that Newcastle want Wilson to help the club’s younger forwards develop over the coming years.

United announced the signing of Australian wonderkid Garang Kuol from A-League side Central Coast Mariners on Friday morning.

The 18-year-old, viewed as Australia’s most exciting young prospect for years, watched United’s win at Craven Cottage from the 2,300-strong away end.

Kuol will return down under before officially joining in January, where he is set to be loaned out amid work permit issues.
