Newcastle United remain interested in signing two illusive January transfer window targets.

NewcastleWorld understands the Magpies retain an interest in signing Jesse Lingard from Manchester United, as well as James Tarkowski, of Burnley.

Both of these players look set to leave their clubs on free transfers in June, when their current deals come to an end.

Eddie Howe made a big play to try and land England international forward Lingard in the winter window. And right up until the last hours of dealing hopes had been high a deal could be struck.

As we now know, Man United chiefs reneged on their promise to allow Lingard to leave, following protracted negotiations with the Magpies. The Red Devils counter-offered Newcastle’s loan deal proposal with a huge downpayment option, which the Magpies’ owners vetoed. And no permanent deal was on the table due to Lingard’s want to keep all of his options open.

Man United did not even consider allowing Lingard to return to West Ham in January, where he spent a successful loan spell last season, as the Hammers were considered rivals to Ralf Rangnick’s side’s European hopes.

Lingard is also interesting Fulham and West Ham as well as Serie A giants AC Milan and Juventus.

While Lingard was a primary target in January, Tarkowski was considered to be on the Magpies’ defensive long list.

Howe did manage to secure the addition of Dan Burn in the winter window when deals for the likes of Tarkowski, Sevilla’s Diego Carlos and Lille’s Sven Botman became too expensive.

Meanwhile, Lingard’s Manchester United exit looks set to be an acrimonious one after the player was not afforded a farewell appearance off the bench against Brentford on Monday night.

Lingard’s brother and agent Louie Scott took to Instagram to express his dismay at his sibling’s treatement by the club where he has spent all but a few months of his career.

The post said: “20 years of blood sweat and tears, four domestic trophies, three cup final goals, not even a farewell. No wonder it’s Conference League next year. Attacking players for celebrations when the club’s being sold to the super league OK. Class of ‘92, Busby Babes, you’re ran by people who don’t even know the offside trap. Classless and the fans need to realise. Goodnight, godbless! Been there since nine years of age and didn’t even get a send-off!!!

“Well done bro your family are proud.”
