Preparations for the 2023-24 Premier League season are already underway as Eddie Howe and Newcastle United’s recruitment team hold talks over the playing squad.

One of the Magpies’ first announcements this summer will be to confirm which players are staying at St James’ Park, and those who have left following the end of their contract.

What is a retained list, and when will Newcastle United announce theirs?

A retained list must be submitted at the end of every Premier League season outlining which players are staying at the club, as well as those being released following the expiration of their contracts.

NewcastleWorld reached out to the Premier League to ask when clubs have to file their retained list, to which they replied “this date is still TBC but likely published mid-June”.

Last year, the Premier League published all 20 clubs’ retained list on their website on June 10.

Who’s at risk of being released by Newcastle United?

The players currently out-of-contract on June 30 are Mark Gillespie, Loris Karius, Paul Dummett, Matt Ritchie, Matty Longstaff, Ciaran Clark.

Magpies’ head coach Eddie Howe has publicly said he wants to keep both Dummett and Ritchie, with the former perhaps most likely to stay than the latter.

On Dummett, Howe said: “I hope we can come to an agreement with Paul and he will stay for next year. I think he is a vital part behind the scenes of our success this year.

“He’s trained superbly and his commitment to Newcastle is undoubted. We’d love him to extend his stay.”

Ritchie, however, could depart and move closer to his family, who live on the South Coast.

“I’ve held various discussions with Matt throughout the season and I think, first and foremost, he’s been very committed to Newcastle and to the team and aims this season,” said Howe. “I have said I desperately want to keep him next year.

“He has had issues surrounding his family and the distance between him and them, it’s never easy when you have young children and that distance when you’re a parent is tough at times. But Matt has been exceptional and I certainly hope he stays for next season.”

While Howe has not commented on Karius’ future, it is understood Newcastle have held tentative conversations in the hope of keeping the former Liverpool goalkeeper.

Karius, whose only appearance for United came in the Carabao Cup final, has rarely featured in the matchday squad and is allowed time to travel back to Italy to be with his pregnant girlfriend Diletta Leotta, who is a high-profile TV presenter with DAZN. There has been interest from clubs in Italy.

Howe also has a decision to make on Mark Gillespie. The Geordie goalkeeper is a big voice behind the scenes but as far as playing goes, his last appearance was almost three years ago.

Matty Longstaff could be handed a short-term deal as he undergoes his rehab from a serious knee injury. However, Ciaran Clark is a certainty to leave after spending the season on loan at Sheffield United.
