A short, sharp statement last week heralded the news many a Newcastle United fan had been waiting for.

It was not a big money centre forward to add goals to the Magpies XI, although one would be gratefully recieved - it was instead the confirmation that Dan Ashworth was to become the club’s first ever sporting director, subject to Premier League approval.

Finally freed from his tortuously lenghty Brighton gardening leave purgatory - Ashworth’s lawn must be the envy of the south coast - the former England DNA pioneer has now, as per another statement on Monday, started work on Tyneside.

This second statement, much fuller in nature than the first, allowed some colour to flow. And amongst the first quotes attributed to Ashworth and the club’s board on the appointment, there was a line which may not have immediately jumped out to readers.

In this statement was hightlighted exactly what responsibilities Ashworth will fulfill at St James’ Park.

And it’s fair to say, Ashworth is going to have his fingerprints over almost every part of the football club’s development over the next few years.

Ashworth will not only be responsible for the “club’s overarching sporting strategy”, which in itself is a very broad remit, he will also be involved in “football development and recruitment at all age levels, and will work closely with head coach Eddie Howe, academy manager Steve Harper and head of recruitment Steve Nickson.”

What Ashworth said about his appointment

"Newcastle United is an incredible football club and I’m delighted to be joining at this very exciting time.

"Each time I’ve been to St. James’ Park in the past, I have been reminded of the club's long history and the unrivalled passion of its fan base. It is a huge football club with great potential, and I am incredibly positive about what we can collectively achieve.

"I’m excited to start work immediately and look forward to being part of a team that is helping the club to grow and achieve long-term success."
