'Here we go' - Fabrizio Romano confirms £23m Newcastle United transfer agreement as medical planned
Newcastle United transfers: The Magpies are closing in on their third summer signing.
Newcastle United are set to sign 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur from Dutch side Ajax.
After confirming the £100million sale of Sandro Tonali on Tottenham Hotspur on Monday, the Magpies have moved quickly to bolster their midfield.
Sources in the Netherlands overnight claimed the Magpies are on the brink of finalising a £23million transfer for Steur. It’s claimed he has agreed a five-year contract and is due on Tyneside in the coming days to undergo his medical.
It would represent Newcastle’s third summer signing after the arrivals of Ewen Jaouen and Bazoumana Toure from Stade de Reims and Hoffenheim respectively. It would also see the club’s transfer spend go over £80million for three players all below the age of 21.
Steur joined Ajax’s academy in 2016 from RKAV Volendam before making his senior debut for the club in February 2025. He has since made 25 first-team appearances for Ajax, scoring once.
Following reports from the Netherlands, transfer influencer Fabrizio Romano jumped on X to give the transfer his ‘here we go’ seal of approval with Newcastle reportedly reaching a verbal agreement to sign the teenager.
Romano wrote: “Newcastle verbally agree deal to sign Seun Steur for fee over €25m here we go! 18-year-old midfielder will join Magpies from Ajax, agreement done overnight and Newcastle planning for medical next. €24m fixed fee, €3m add-ons as Telegraaf reports.”
While Newcastle’s transfer business is hotting up this summer, the club have sold Tonali and Anthony Gordon for a combined fee of around £170million on the back of a 12th place finish in the Premier League. New players will bring fresh energy into the squad, but there is still plenty of uncertainty over how the young arrivals will settle and adapt to the Premier League.
