Newcastle United could receive up to £600,000 from Dan Barlaser’s proposed move to Middlesbrough.

The Magpies inserted a 40 per cent sell-on clause when Mike Ashley was still owner after offloading their academy graduate to Rotherham United in 2020.

Barlaser is on the verge of joining the Teesside club for an initial fee of £900k rising to £1.5million with add-ons.

The Gateshead-born midfielder spent 14 years at Newcastle, and made his senior debut during an FA Cup win against Birmingham City in January 2017.

He made further cup appearances against Oxford United, Nottingham Forest, Blackburn and Morecambe before being sold to Rotherham, whom he helped to promotion from League One the season prior.

The 26-year-old also enjoyed loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and Accrington Stanley.

Speaking about his departure at the time, former head coach Steve Bruce said: “I wish Dan the very, very best of luck. He had a wonderful loan spell last year. He’s got to an age where I think he needs to play, and I hope he goes and has a wonderful career.

“He’s been with us since he was nine years old and I wish him the best of luck.”
