Newcastle United Women continued their 100 per-cent record at St James’ Park - beating Bradford City 6-1 in their quest to become FA Women’s National League Division One North champions.

Previously getting the better of Alnwick Town and Barnsley, the Lady Magpies recorded their heaviest St James’ win to date in front of another record-breaking crowd of 24,092. Beth Guy and Charlotte Potts scored braces, while Georgia Gibson and Rachel Lee were also on target.

Newcastle, respectfully, were tipped to beat second-bottom Bradford, however increasing their goal difference may be a deciding factor come the end of the campaign in three weeks’ time.

By scoring six, Becky Langley’s side moved onto the same GD (+35) as league leaders Durham Cestria. United remain six points behind Durham but have two games in-hand.

Kick-off was delayed 15 minutes as fans waited outside the turnstiles at St James’ Park. Among those watching were co-owners Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi, and they wait just over 20 minutes for Newcastle to break the deadlock through Guy.

Gibson delivered an in-swinging corner which Guy – one of the smallest players on the pitch – met with her head and knocked it powerfully past Skye Kirkham from six-yards out. The second goal was carbon copy to the first as Potts rose highest in the box.

Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Gibson scored her third St James’ goal in as many games - slotting past Kirkham after going one-one with the Bradford goalkeeper.

Moments later, Kacie Elson was tripped inside the penalty area. The referee awarded a spot-kick and Lee did the rest for 4-0.

Langley called for her side to net at least five goals and her players completed the challenge. Guy found herself in loads of space from a free kick and gladly took the opportunity to flick a header into the far corner.

Despite a late Bradford goal, United quickly managed to restore their vital five-goal advantage when Potts netted in front of the Gallowgate End - living out a childhood dream.

The Lasses’ promotion fate remains in their own hands, though they’ll likely be required to win their remaining three matches against Leeds United, Bradford and Barnsley - all of which are away from home.
