Newcastle United fans are set to discover whether or not Kieran Trippier will be fit to face Aston Villa on Sunday.

The England right-back limped off in stoppage time with a slight calf injury during the Magpies’ 3-1 win against Everton on Tuesday evening.

Trippier left the pitch to a standing ovation having capped off a faultless defensive display by dispatching an 80th-minute free-kick past Jordan Pickford.

Head coach Eddie Howe will be asked for an update on Trippier at his Villa pre-match press conference this morning (updates from 10am).

One player Howe will definitely be without is Matt Targett.

The left-back, on loan from Aston Villa for the remainder of the season, is ineligible to play against his parent club.

Both players played a huge part as United climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone in midweek.

The rest of Newcastle’s injury list

Joe Willock gingerly departed against Everton but Howe did not address the former Arsenal man as an injury concern at full-time.

Howe confirmed earlier in the week that top scorer Callum Wilson is unlikely to return until the final few games of the season.

The striker picked up a calf injury in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United on December 27 - leaving Chris Wood to carry the goal burden.

Federico Fernandez, also sidelined with a calf issue, is edging closer to a return after beginning work with the sports scientists on Monday.

Either Dan Burn or Javier Manquillo are likely to replace Targett at left-back with Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett still unavailable.

Dummett hasn’t trained since the victory at Leeds United last month, while Ritchie is out “longer-term”.
