Newcastle United are set to table an offer to make Sergej Milinkovic-Savic one of the highest-earning players in the club’s history - according to a report in Italy.

The Magpies have been linked with the Lazio midfielder on several occasions over the last year as they look to continue building on the momentum gathered since the PIF-led takeover of the club in October 2021. The signings of the likes of Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes and Sven Botman have inspired a remarkable turnaround in fortunes that has led United to their first major cup final since 1999 and could bring a return to Champions League football for the first time since 2003.

Qualifying for the latter would give the Magpies a realistic chance of beating the likes of Juventus, Arsenal and Liverpool to the signing of Serbian star Milinkovic-Savic - according to Italian outlet CalcioMercatoWeb.

There are suggestions the 27-year-old could leave Lazio this summer when he moves into the final 12 months of his current contract with the Biancocelesti and the latest reports suggest Newcastle are preparing to offer him a £160,000-a-week offer to tempt him to Tyneside.

Despite speculation linking the midfielder with a move away from the club, Lazio sporting director Igil Tare is determined to retain his services. Speaking last month to Gianluca di Marzio, he said: “He’s the best midfielder in Serie A. To question his qualities is a utopian thing. The bond he has with this club goes beyond these rumours about his situation.

“At the right time we had a meeting with the president, a month ago with his agents, we are very calm, the relationship we have is excellent. I don’t understand why we want to create drama, last week with Luis Alberto… With us these things don’t exist and are clarified internally.”
