Newcastle United set to trigger midfielder deal as eight players set to leave in 2025 - as it stands

Sean Longstaff is reportedly set to extend his stay at Newcastle United.

Longstaff has been on the books at his boyhood club since the age of eight and has made 192 senior appearances since making his debut in December 2018.

The 26-year-old last signed a new contract in 2022, which is due expire at the end of the campaign. But according to the Daily Telegraph, there’s an option of a further year, and Newcastle plan to trigger the clause.

Speaking about his contract situation in the summer, Longstaff said: “I don't know. You’ll probably have to ask someone else.”

“Yeah, I just want to play football. I've been in Newcastle for a long time. So, for me, my goal since I was eight was to get another contract in Newcastle and that sort of mindset hasn't changed. So, for me, it's just about proving my worth to the team, to the manager, and what will be, will be.”

Longstaff has found himself on the bench in recent weeks with Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton selected as the midfield three.

But the former Blackpool loanee remains a key part of Eddie Howe’s squad. United’s boss regularly speaks highly of Longstaff.

“You just have to look at his qualities,” Howe said previously. “He is highly intelligent and understands the team’s objectives in and out of possession.

“Technically, he is a very good player, and he has high energy. If you look at his running data week to week, it is usually one of the highest in the Premier League. He brings a lot of energy to the team and that is what we would miss if he is not playing.

“It is always difficult to talk about one player in detail, but Sean has been very, very good since I have been here as manager. He’s brilliant to work with from my perspective and I think his general performances have improved.

“He still has areas to work on, like every player, but he has been fundamentally important. He has performed really well, and played near enough every game when he has been fit.

“Competition now is higher than it has ever been. He is going to know that and be very aware that he is competing with very good players for a starting place. That’s a battle I hope elevates every single one of them to play better than they think they are capable of.”

There are, however, still eight players - as it stands - out of contract this summer.
