Newcastle United have recalled Jay Turner-Cooke from his loan spell at Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone, NewcastleWorld understands.

The former Sunderland youngster featured for Eddie Howe's first-team in pre-season with cameo appearances against Gateshead - where he scored in a 3-2 win - Brighton and Hove Albion, Chelsea, Fiorentina and Villarreal.

It was hoped the 20-year-old would further his development in Scotland but has gone to make just six appearances - the last being on December 3 when St Johnstone were beaten 3-1 by Celtic.

We understand the lack of game time is the reason behind United's decision to recall the midfielder. He'll likely stay with the under-21s for the remainder of the campaign and have opportunities to train with Howe's senior squad.

Joe White returned from his loan spell at League Two side Crewe Alexandra midway through January and Newcastle head coach Howe has decided to include the 21-year-old in his plans for the remainder of the season.

"Joe will stay with us for the rest of the season," confirmed Howe last week. "We're light on bodies in midfield and I think it is a good opportunity for him to come in and show he's at the level.

"He's certainly improved. The loan spell has been a very beneficial thing for him. This could be a great opportunity for him."

The Carlisle-born midfielder was on the bench for Tuesday night's 3-1 win at Aston Villa and could make his debut in the coming weeks if injuries or suspensions crop up.

With Joelinton, Joe Willock and Elliot Anderson currently injured, United have just three fit senior midfielders in Sean Longstaff, Lewis Miley, and Bruno Guimaraes, who is one Premier League yellow card away from serving a one-match ban.
