Newcastle United are attempting to hijack West Ham’s pursuit of Alphonse Areola, according to Daily Mail.

The Magpies have made it clear their intentions of signing a new shotstopper this summer, with both Freddie Woodman and Karl Darlow potentially heading for the exit door.

Areola spent last season on loan with West Ham and was their first choice keeper during their Europa League campaign, while he only managed one Premier League appearance.

Despite that, David Moyes’ side is eager to bring him to London permanently and they have been in talks with PSG over a £7.6 million deal for the 29-year-old.

However, Newcastle’s interest have stalled discussions in the capital, with the Magpies keen to tempt him a move up north.

Areola joined PSG in 2013 but has spent the last three seasons on loan, including a campaign as Fulham’s first choice in between the sticks.

The Frenchman has only spent two years in England and has been located in London for both, which could certainly give West Ham the advantage in their battle.

The report claims that Areola would prefer to stay in the capital rather than travelling up to the North East, meaning Newcastle could have a difficult task on their hands if they are to lure him to St. James’ Park.

Any potential success for Eddie Howe’s side could depend on them offering a more lucrative deal than the Hammers.
