Newcastle United Women have completed the signing of Emma Kelly from local rivals Sunderland.

Teesside-born Kelly started her career with the Weasiders before returning in 2021 following spells at Middlesbrough, Birmingham City and Icelandic side IB Vestmannaeyjar.

The 26-year-old has represented England at both under-17s and under-19s level and boasts a vast experience in the Women’s Super League, captaining the Black Cast last season.

Persuading Kelly to drop down into the Women’s third-tier is a major coup for Newcastle.

On signing Kelly, Newcastle Women boss Becky Langley said: “I am very excited to work with Emma this season.

“I’ve known Emma for a lot of years and she’s a talented player. She will bring great leadership qualities from her experience in the WSL and Championship. Emma also played full-time in Iceland which brings great experience.”

NewcastleWorld understands at least four players are set to follow Kelly to the Lady Magpies following the team’s move to full-time professional status.

Former Sunderland forward Tyler Dodds is set to join as are Hannah Greenwood and Bridget Galloway from Durham Women and Elyssia Boddy from Middlesbrough.

The Lady Magpies are the only full-time club competing outside of the Women’s Super League and Championship.

“This is a historic moment for our Newcastle United family and for the women’s game regionally, nationally and beyond,” said CEO Darren Eales last month.

“Newcastle United Women is a hugely important part of our vision for the club, and this is the right step at the right time as we strive for sustainable success.

“I’d like to thank our owners for their incredible support and congratulate Su, Becky and all the players and staff for their achievements so far. We look forward to the exciting journey ahead.”
