Fabian Schar’s Newcastle United contract is set to expire at the end of this season but there’s a chance the in form defender isn’t going anywhere just yet.

The Swiss media has reported there’s a clause in the 31-year-old’s contract that allows his current deal to be extended by one year- taking him to 2025.

And it seems that’s exactly what the Swiss player is after.

Whilst on international duty, Schar spoke to Blick and said Newcastle was his “second home” and that the only bad thing he had to say about the city was the weather.

“Newcastle is my second home. Team, coach, club- I feel very comfortable,” said the centre-back.

“I really enjoy it and I hope that this journey continues.”

It was believed Schar would be out-of-contract in 2024 but the added clause could see him stay on until 2025 without any need for negotiations.

The 31-year-old remains central to Eddie Howe’s defence that saw the Magpies keep 13 clean sheets last season. He also scored an incredible goal in Newcastle’s 4-1 win over PSG that the head coach said ‘took his breath away.’

“It’s not a conventional center-half’s finish, It’s a centre-forward’s finish,” said Howe. “But he has the capability to produce moments to take your breath away. He’s technically so good.”

After the finalisation of Bruno Guimaraes and Dan Burn’s new contracts, it has been reported talks have now transferred to Joelinton.

The 27-year-old moved to St James’ Park from Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim for £40million in 2019. He put pen to paper on a five-year deal, which is set to expire in 2025.
