Joelinton is walking a disciplinary tightrope ahead of Newcastle United’s Premier League trip to Everton on Saturday night (kick-off 5:30pm).

The Brazilian is highly regarded for his aggression and combativeness in the Magpies’ midfield but that is likely to come at a cost in the near future.

Indeed, Joelinton is just one booking away from serving a one-match Premier League ban having been yellow carded in four of United’s opening six fixtures. His latest caution came in last Saturday’s 1-1 draw win Manchester City for a foul on Erling Haaland.

Under Premier League rules, any player showed five yellow cards in the opening 19 league matches is required to serve a one-match suspension. That means Joelinton must stay out the referee’s book until the trip to Tottenham Hotspur on January 4 = a scenario that is highly unlikely.

That said, Bruno Guimaraes did manage to avoid two-match ban during the second half of last season when he went 11 consecutive matches without being carded.

“A big relief, for him and for us,” Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said in response. “I was just saying earlier, we had a meeting a long time ago and he promised me he wouldn’t get booked, and I didn’t believe a word of it to be honest!

“Because we had so many games to go and his style of play is what it is, I didn’t think he could control that in the moments he needed to. But an amazing thing he’s done for the team because he knew if we lost him we’d be even more depleted. As you saw today, it is so important to us.

Joelinton will have to 13 games without being booked if he is to repeat a similar feat.

Meanwhile, Dan Burn has been cautioned three times this campaign while Guimaraes is on two. Lewis Hall, Sandro Tonali,Fabian Schar, Jacob Murphy, Lloyd Kelly andSean Longstaff all have one booking each.
