Newcastle United supporters have been left scratching their heads at Callum Wilson's cryptic social media post.

The Magpies No.9 attracted transfer interest from both Atletico Madrid and AC Milan over weekend, while the Evening Standard has today linked Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United to the striker.

But Wilson is also edging closer to a return from a calf injury after missing the last three matches against Liverpool, Sunderland and Manchester City. Fans have been left wondering if the 31-year-old is indeed referring to his injury comeback, or if he is suggesting a possible exit.

Wilson used the tornado and hourglass emoji accompanied by four photos, including two of himself, the sun setting and a quote that reads "don't compare your life to others. There's no comparison between the sun and the moon, they shine when it's there time."

Fans have been quick to respond on X (formerly Twitter), many of whom have been left baffled.

"I don’t know what these cryptic emojis, quotes or sunsets mean," said one fan. "But I do know this has been one of the weirdest transfer windows I can remember." Another said: "What does this mean Cal, don’t leave, please!".

Adding to cryptic theme, Wilson appeared on the BBC Footballer's Football Podcast on Wednesday and when asked if he could shed any light on the rumours he replied: "No." Then asked if he knew anything about Munich's interest in teammate Trippier, Wilson again said: "No."

Before a brief silence, Wilson continued: "It's January, the window's open and there's always speculation around players, not just myself but with everybody else in the squad. I haven't got much more to say than that."
