Karius remained unused in any competition until an unlikely set of circumstances led to the German making a surprise appearance in United’s Carabao Cup Final defeat against Manchester United last month.
With Dubravka cup-tied after featuring for the Red Devils earlier in the competition and Darlow out on loan at Championship club Hull City, the red card shown to Nick Pope against Liverpool just eight days before the final left Karius and Mark Gillespie as Eddie Howe’s only senior goalkeepers.

Speaking about the next steps in his career, Karius admitted he was unsure of what lies ahead and revealed talks over an extension are yet to take place because ‘there was no need for it’.
“I’m here until the summer. I don’t know if I’ll stay longer or not,” he told the club’s matchday programme.

“But I’m just enjoying my time here really. Whatever role I have to play until the end of the season, I’m doing it for the team to be successful, and then we will see. Everything is possible. But for sure, my aim for me personally is to get more game time again in the future because I know I can perform and play on this level.”
With a free transfer departure from Tyneside seeming increasingly likely, Italian outlet CalcioMercatoWeb have reported Karius has been offered to Serie A giants AC Milan and Inter Milan and have suggested the keeper is open to a move to Italy to spend more time with his partner.
