It’s looking as though Newcastle United will be without Joe Willock for the rest of the 2022-23 Premier League season.

The former Arsenal man hobbled off on the hour-mark as the Magpies beat Brighton and Hove Albion 4-1 on Thursday to move closer to Champions League qualification.

United led 2-1 before Willock departed after an own goal by Deniz Undav and a header from Dan Burn. Undav pulled one back before Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes wrapped up the result in the closing stages.

Newcastle will seal a top four finish if they beat Leicester City on Monday, and it seems almost certain that Willock won’t be involved.

Magpies head coach Eddie Howe confirmed after the game Willock was a doubt, and images since have suggested the 23-year-old won’t play again this campaign.

Meanwhile, Joelinton is also a doubt for the visit of Leicester. Without the Brazilian or Willock, Howe would be forced into two changes in his midfield.

“The two Joes are a bit of a doubt for us,” Howe said. “Joelinton took a knock, I think, and Willock looks like he’s got a hamstring injury.”

Newcastle hope to have Sean Longstaff back available, while Elliot Anderson is also an option after coming on in place of Willock. England under-17s star Lewis Miley was also named on the bench.
