Miguel Almiron is pushing for a recall to Newcastle United’s starting XI against Leeds United after fully recovering from a thigh injury.

The Paraguayan netted his 11th goal of the Premier League campaign in a 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on March 3 before suffering a thigh injury in training days after.

As a result, the 29-year-old missed wins over Nottingham Forest, Manchester United, West Ham United and Brentford before making his comeback as a substitute in the 3-0 defeat at Aston Villa.

Almiron started the recent 4-1 win at Everton but has largely been kept out of the starting XI by Jacob Murphy’s strong form. Visiting Elland Road this afternoon (kick-off 12:30pm), the winger is in contention for a recall.

Asked about Almiron’s fitness, Howe said: “I’d say he’s a lot closer [to full fitness] now with the games he’s had.

“Miggy had, although it wasn’t a big injury, it was enough to keep him out for a period of time which, for a player like Miggy whose biggest strength is physical endurance, he needs time to get that match sharpness.

“It’d say he is pretty much 100 per-cent fit now.”

Almiron has enjoyed his best season at St James’ Park since joining from MLS side Atlanta United in January 2019 for £21million. He scored six goals in as many games in October, which saw him win the Premier League Player of the Month award.
