Joelinton will miss Newcastle United’s Premier League clash at Southampton on Sunday afternoon. The Brazilian is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow card of the campaign in the 4-0 win over Aston Villa.

The 26-year-old scored the Magpies’ third goal against Villa when he reacted quickest to Callum Wilson’s shot that was parried by goalkeeper Robin Olsen. Joelinton passionately celebrated in front of the Strawberry Corner in what was his first goal at St James’ Park in almost a year.

However, five minutes later, Joelinton was yellow carded after bringing down Tyrone Mings and as a result will miss the visit to the South Coast. Any player who is shown five cautions in the opening 19 Premier League games are forced to serve a one-match suspension.

Joelinton has emerged as an all-action midfielder during Eddie Howe’s 12 months in charge but has started the last two games - wins against Tottenham Hotspur and Villa - as a wide forward. His enforced absence will likely see either Allan Saint-Maximin, Jacob Murphy or Ryan Fraser recalled to the starting line-up.

On the opposite flank, it’s fair to assume Miguel Almiron’s place in the team is safe after the Paraguayan scored his sixth goal in as many games - seven in total this season - with another October Goal of the Mouth contender versus Villa.
