Newcastle United star suffers Achilles injury after being ruled out for four months

Newcastle United's absentee list has hit double figures once again this season.

Newcastle United were without seven first-team players for Saturday afternoon's 4-3 comeback victory against West Ham United.

During the international break, the Magpies confirmed fresh injuries for Sven Botman and Lewis Miley. Botman will miss six to nine months with an ACL tear, while Miley has gone to see a specialist regarding his back injury.

But one player that wasn't mentioned was Matt Targett, who was also absent against the Hammers.

The left-back recently spent four months out recovering from hamstring surgery before returning to the matchday squad for defeats to Chelsea and Manchester City earlier this month.

And according to United boss Eddie Howe, the 28-year-old is set for another short spell on the sidelines after picking up an Achilles.

He said: "Not a big problem, he's got a little bit of tendonitis in his Achilles. We envisage he should be back very soon."

Although it may be a minor issue, it extends Targett's wait for a senior appearance. His last outing was when he sustained his hamstring injury in the opening stages of the Carabao Cup win at Manchester United on November 1.

Indeed, Targett has started just seven Premier League matches since joining permanently from Aston Villa for £15million in the summer of 2022. In the previous four months when he was on loan, the full-back started 16 games.

Dan Burn has been a regular at left-back for the past the past 18 months while Newcastle signed both Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall in the summer. Targett is contracted at St James' Park until 2026.

Newcastle could be without as many as 12 players for Tuesday's Premier League clash at home to Everton after Tino Livramento and Miguel Almiron came off injured against West Ham. Jamaal Lascelles (ACL) and Anthony Gordon (suspended) are ruled out but it is hoped Kieran Trippier will return from his calf injury.
