Sean Longstaff fuelled bemusement on social media after being snapped turning out for Tynemouth Cricket Club.

Hailing from a proud sporting family, the Newcastle United midfielder’s dad, David, is a former ice hockey player for Great Britain, synonymous with the Whitley Warriors. Longstaff’s cousin Alan Thompson also represented the Magpies, Aston Villa, Celtic and Leeds United while his brother, Matty, burst through the ranks at Newcastle.

Cricket, however, is not a sport associated with the 26-year-old. That is why Toon supporters were stunned when Longstaff was videoed steaming in at full speed for Tynemouth against Benwell Hill Cricket Club.

And it appears that the Newcastle ace is a handy bowler - a revelation discovered just days before England kicked off their T20 World Cup campaign. A late contender for the squad, perhaps?

Longstaff took two wickets for just 20 runs from six overs. However, the North Shields native is not as competent with the bat, coming in at No.10 and managing just eight balls from seven deliveries before being run out. Longstaff’s heroics with the ball helped Tynemouth record a 95-run victory just days after the Premier League campaign finished.

The footage shows promising signs for Eddie Howe given Longstaff’s fitness struggles this season. He admitted to battling a foot injury since last April, fighting through the pain barrier for Newcastle’s cause as they chased European football.

An injury crisis means he started 22 consecutive games from December until the end of the season. Eight goals was, however, his best figures since breaking through the academy ranks in 2018.
