Newcastle United deadline day signing Harrison Ashby could go straight into the squad to face former club West Ham United on Saturday (kick-off 5:30pm).

The 21-year-old sampled the St James’ Park atmosphere last night as the Magpies progressed into the Carabao Cup final with a 3-1 aggregate win over Southampton.

Ashby, alongside Anthony Gordon, was unveiled to United supporters prior to kick-off before taking his seat in the directors’ box.

But the young full-back could be taking in Saturday’s game from the dugout, with Newcastle a full-back down following a fresh injury to Javier Manquillo.

When asked about the reason for bringing Ashby to Tyneside, Howe revealed Manquillo had picked up an injury, though did not specify what the issue was.

He said: “Well he’s definitely one for the future. He’s a talented young player, we feel he’s got, as all young players have, areas to improve but I think he’s got good character and really good physical and technical attributes.

“Javi Manquillo picked up an injury in training so he will be missing for three to four weeks. It’s an area we were light on in numbers and bringing Harrison in we feel it’s good value in the market. It was a good deal all round for us.”

Manquillo’s absence means only Ashby is the club’s only recognised right-back behind first choice Kieran Trippier.
