Newcastle United dynamo Bruno Guimaraes has received heavy criticism in the Brazilian press for his below-par performance in a 2-0 loss against Marcelo Bielsea’s Uruguay during a World Cup qualifier.

Several news outlets in Brazil and beyond lambasted Guimaraes after the final whistle, with some giving him a pitiful player rating in their match reports.

Guimaraes’ weak showing wasn’t the only call for concern for Brazil on Tuesday evening. Their star player, Neymar, was stretchered off the field and will undergo surgery on his ACL to correct the issue [via BBC Sport].

So far, Guimaraes has won 16 caps for his native country, scoring a single goal along the way. He has had a slow start to his international career - he will need to become more consistent on the international stage if he wants to guarantee himself a place in the Brazil squad.

What player rating did Bruno Guimaraes receive from the press?

In Globo Esporte, Guimaraes was given a damning rating of 1.9/10 for his lacklustre display against Uruguay. Perhaps even more damning is that this rating was decided by fans - showing that his fellow countrymen are not convinced by his performances in the famous yellow kit.

This wasn’t the only low score that Guimaraes received from the press in the wake of the game on Tuesday evening. Argentinian media outlet Ole gave him a 4/1, which was lower than the score they gave to Manchester United’s Casemiro, who was also off the pace.

What was said regarding Guimaraes’ performance?

Globo Esporte wrote on Guimaraes’ performance, summarising his display by saying: “He was another who oscillated between trying to get between the centre-backs to help out with the ball and technical errors that he doesn’t usually make.”

The Brazilian outlet seems to be noting that Guimaraes generally performs better in a Newcastle shirt than how he played against Uruguay. He has been excellent for the Toon so far this season - but his performances for Brazil tell a different story.
