Morgan Gibbs-White remains linked with a move to Newcastle United just 18 months after joining Nottingham Forest

Newcastle United supporters are divided about whether they should sign Nottingham Forest talisman Morgan Gibbs-White.

While talk has centred around outgoings in recent days, any sales could bankroll a marquee January arrival. Gibbs-White’s likely price tag would indicate exactly that should he join the Magpies this month.

Eyebrows were raised when Forest stumped up £42.5million to sign the midfielder - who The Telegraph claim is on Newcastle's radar - 18 months ago. He arrived during a hectic period for the Tricky Trees following their promotion to the Premier League.

Remarkably, Forest have signed 43 players since winning the Championship play-off final in May 2022. That expenditure is largely to blame for being charged with breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules earlier this month.

Forest, alongside Everton, face the possibility of a points deduction if found guilty by an independent commission. Gibbs-White is their prized asset but a lack of FFP/PSR wriggle room could open a window of opportunity for Newcastle to strike a deal.

But Toon fans are torn on whether the 23-year-old - who ripped Newcastle apart a month ago - would fit the bill. One social media post read: “I cannot be the only one thinking Morgan Gibbs White is decent but nowhere near worth £50million.

“Let alone (him being) lazy at tracking back and playing best in a role we don't have in our setup. With FFP, how could anyone justify us spending this?”

Another questioned how Newcastle fans can “turn their noses up” at Gibbs-White, who has three goals and just as many assists across all competitions this season. The comment read: “Parts of the fanbase are already turning their noses up at Morgan Gibbs-White. We don’t deserve nice things at times. He’s a profile we absolutely lack and need. (I’d) be over the moon if we can pull that off.”

Somebody else agreed, suggesting Newcastle could sell star man Kieran Trippier to create headroom for Gibbs-White’s arrival. He posted: “I’d be gutted to see Trippier go but, if it means we can go for Gibbs-White or someone of that pedigree, I wouldn’t mind. (I) feel Livramento is a perfect replacement.”
