Newcastle United’s long wait for a trophy is over after beating Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final.

Football icon David Beckham has shown his respect for Newcastle United after they were crowned Carabao Cup winners.

The Magpies beat Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley to end their 70-year trophy drought. Dan Burn put United in front before Alexander Isak doubled the lead shortly after the break. Federico Chiesa pulled one back for the Reds in stoppage time but it was too little, too late.

Eddie Howe’s side were congratulated by a number of high-profile stars, including former England captain Beckham.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder posted on Instagram: “Amazing moment today for a club with some of the best and most loyal supporters in the game... congratulations to all the Geordies.”

David Beckham has spoken about Newcastle United before

Speaking to Classic Football Shirts in November 2023, the 49-year-old revealed he had a soft spoke for Newcastle when growing up.

Beckham said: "Newcastle always had good shirts, to be honest. I've always loved Newcastle as a club, I love the fans, I love the way they are. We played up in Newcastle for England and they were amazing.”

Eddie Howe reacts to Carabao Cup win

Howe has become the first Newcastle manager since Joe Harvey in 1969 to win a trophy on Tyneside. But Howe would rather the players receive all the credit.

He said: “I think you're pleased for other people, really. I'm so pleased for the players. They've all had different journeys to get to this point, but we've come together as a squad. I love working with them every day. Honoured to be their leader.

“And for the supporters who came in there thousands today who supported us back home. Since I've been at the football club, the support we've had home and away has been incredible.

“So I'm just so pleased they have this trophy to end the long wait. And hopefully we can get some more in the future.

“It's amazing what football can do. And I think it's one of the rare sports that has that ability to give people days that they'll always remember. And with such a long wait for a trophy, this will be a day that I'm sure everyone will never forget. We will never forget it. I certainly won't.

“I think there's different ways to win trophies. Today we won it in the best way. We played a brilliant opponent. We've been the best team in the Premier League all season by a long way. And for me, we were the better team.”
