Newcastle United target ‘made available’ for £25m amid Southampton interest

Newcastle United have been linked with a large number of players since the Premier League season came to a close.

Newcastle United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Winks, with the midfielder’s price tag named as he is made available for transfer.

The Daily Mail have reported that Winks is up for sale for £25 million, with the 26-year-old only starting nine matches in the Premier League this season.

The Magpies have found great success with January signing Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton this year, however it looks like they are still eager to bolster their midfield during their new owners’ first summer transfer window.

Winks became a regular starter under Jose Mourinho during the 2019-20 campaign, however he has since dropped down the pecking order and Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s partnership makes a resurgence seem unlikely.

The midfielder’s previous form for the London club led to him earning ten caps for England following his senior debut five years ago, but he has failed to make an international appearance since November 2020.

While Newcastle may have the advantage over other teams following last year’s takeover, they will face competition from Southampton for Winks this summer.

Eddie Howe’s side have enjoyed a spectacular second half of the campaign and any potential arrival will face a tough task forcing their way into the starting line-up, with Guimarães struggling to get his first start for the club until March.
