And the young Spaniard, linked with the Magpies in the last two transfer windows, is set to be available for a knockdown price.

The highly-rated defender was part of the Valladolid side, who saw their relegation from La Liga confirmed at the weekend. As a result, the player, as part of his contract, can now be signed for just £17.2million.

That massively reduced fee - the player had been expected to move for nearly double that - has alerted a number of European clubs, with Arsenal and Dortmund said to be leading the race, according to trusted transfer social media figure, Fabrizio Romano.

While he claims no bid has been recieved yet from the Gunners, Romano confirms their interest, while the Bundesliga runners up, who will also be in the Champions League with Newcastle next season, are said to be ‘strongly interested’.

It remains to be seen whether the Magpies will follow through on their initial interest in the player, especially given the January signing of prospect Harrison Ashby from West Ham United.

Ashby was brought in to act as an understudy to the Magpies’ player of the year, Kieran Trippier. The player is, however, yet to make his Newcastle debut, and was only brought into the first-team fold in the final weeks of the campaign, due to injuries elsewhere in the group.
