Newcastle United will play in the Champions League proper for the first time since 2002/03 next season.

It’s been 20 years since Newcastle-upon-Tyne with its mighty black and whites and the Champions League group stages last met.

Back then it was drama aplenty with historic first group stage comebacks, the joy of Feyenoord, then the Milan takeover. The city, as the old song goes, is reportedly still yet to see a Mackem to this day.

It’s isn’t long to wait for those days again, with Europe’s premier competition set to land back on Tyneside in September. The draw for the group stage, where Eddie Howe’s men enter automatically this time, takes place on August 31.

And one thing that has been getting fans excited since the weekend has been the new home kit, which was launched on the day of the Blaydon Races, an event etched into Geordie folklore.

The black and white shirt, with a distinct nod to the one worn by club hero Kevin Keegan in the 1980s, has been flying off the shelves of the St James’ Park store, with fans queuing around the corner on Saturday morning for their pick of the kit.

Most, however, were keen to see what the famous Champions League emblem looks like on a Newcastle sleeve - and with this social post, the club have delivered.

On United’s official Twitter account the club posted out the kit with Champions League sleeve logo, saying: “A thing of beauty”, with an added heart eyes emoji.

This year’s logo has a UEFA Foundation for Children logo underneath.

Kits and badges are available in person at the club’s St James’ Park store, as well as online at nufc.co.uk.
