Former Newcastle United assistant manager Dean Saunders wants to see Aaron Ramsey in a Magpies shirt this season.

The Wales international is searching for a new club after having his reported £400,000-a-week contract terminated by Juventus this week.

Ramsey’s career has stalled in recent years with his time in Serie A blighted by injuries - capped off by a disappointing loan spell at Europa League finalists Rangers last season.

The Old Lady were blunt as it comes when announcing Ramsey’s departure via a 13-word statement reading: “The consensual termination of the contract that bound Aaron Ramsey to Juventus is official. Good luck, @AaronRamsay!”

But despite his struggles, fellow countryman Saunders believes the 31-year-old still has a plenty to offer ahead of the Qatar World Cup.

Saunders told talkSPORT: “I’d like to see him at Newcastle. I think that’s the train you want to jump on. Or Nottingham Forest.

“A lot of people don’t realise Steve Cooper is Welsh. He’s been involved with the England camp a long time but he’ll know Aaron.

“In the Euros, when Wales played Turkey, (Gareth) Bale and Ramsey played together – and Ramsey was magnificent.

“He’s had a few injuries. He broke his leg [against] Birmingham and it affected him for a long time.

“He’s got a great football brain. He covers more ground than any player on the pitch. Good finisher, great lad.”

Ramsey is remembered fondly for his 11 years at Arsenal, where he made over 350 appearances and scored 65 goals.

The Magpies were briefly linked with Ramsey in January and any potential move would likely require the club to break its wage structure.

That is something Eddie Howe’s side are reluctant to do in the early stages under the new ownership.
