And they have already started to back up that excitement, picking up four points from their first two games, including a hard-fought away draw with the impressive Brighton.

An even tougher task awaits this weekend, facing Manchester City at home, and we should get a good measure of just how good Newcastle are.

In the meantime, Eddie Howe will be continuing his search for new signings, and here we round up all the latest transfer news and rumours surrounding St James’ Park:

Joao Pedro latest

According to reports, Newcastle came up short with their £20million bid, with Watford swiftly rejecting the offer.

The Magpies are being backed to make a fresh offer, and they have already been told how much they will have to pay.

According to transfer expert Pete O’Rourke, Watford want £30m to sell Joao Pedro.

Newcastle will now need to decide whether to pay that total or turn attention elsewhere as they search for a new frontman goes on.

Hudson-Odoi boost

Newcastle are said to be favourites to land Chelsea star Callum Hudson-Odoi this summer.

According to The Sun, the Magpies are ‘strong favourites’ to land the winger on loan, with playing opportunites looking to be scarce for Hudson-Odoi - he had previously been used in a wing-back position under manager Thomas Tuchel, but failed to make the position his own following the initial experiment.

The signing of Raheem Sterling could mean the winger gets few first-team chances, and Newcastle are said to be interested as they look to add to their attacking ranks.

It’s claimed St James’ Park is the most likely destination if Hudson-Odoi is allowed to leave Stamford Bridge.

This could be one to keep an eye on between now and the end of the transfer window.
