Feyenoord manager Arne Slot has revealed that Yankuba Minteh often needs one-on-one coaching to improve his game.

Newcastle United supporters are excited about what the winger could bring to their side next season. Signed from Odense Boldklub for £7million last summer, Minteh was immediately shipped out on loan to Feyenoord.

The Dutch giants have given him the platform for first-team football, with Minteh playing - and scoring - in the Champions League. Last night, the 19-year-old bagged an equaliser against Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven.

Feyenoord almost went on to win the game - and break PSV’s unbeaten record - but the hosts levelled themselves to clinch a 2-2 draw. The right flank is an area Newcastle could look to improve next year.

Doubts remain about whether Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy are good enough for where the Magpies want to be long-term. Giving Minteh a chance may offer a solution - and current boss Slot has given Eddie Howe advice on how to get the best out of the Gambian international.

“To determine whether he has really improved, I think we should take a longer period (to assess),” he told reporters. “When it comes to Yankuba, one player is paying attention during a match review and, with the other, after a minute and a half you no longer have the feeling that he is picking up very much.

“I won’t say which group Yankuba belongs to but it is true that, after the discussion, he is often taken aside to discuss exactly what he has gained from it. In order to get him better, we have to keep him because I think there is still a lot of room for him. He has only been a professional for two years.”
