Newcastle United transfer target fails medical as door opens for fresh approach

A look at the latest Newcastle United transfer news and rumours.

It’s just five weeks until Newcastle United get their 2026/27 Premier League season underway at home to Liverpool.

And the Magpies are under no illusions about the work that still needs to be done in the transfer market. Eddie Howe has welcomed Ewen Jaouen, Sean Steur and Bazoumana Toure into his squad, but there are still several positions that need addressing.

Here’s a look at the latest transfer speculation and rumours:

Newcastle United target fails medical

Union Saint-Gilloise right-back Anan Khalaili has seen a move to Serie A giants Inter Milan fall through.

The 21-year-old had agreed to join Inter in a deal worth £25million but won’t complete the transfer after failing his medical.

Inter President Beppe Marotta confirmed: “We had negotiated the purchase of Khalaili, but he failed the medical tests, the CONI (Italian Olympic Committee) just informed us and I wanted to let you all know.

“In Italy there are very strict rules on medical tests, so it is not a choice made by the club, we simply have to accept it, because this is about looking after the health of the player.

“When the CONI don’t give the certificate, he is not allowed to participate in any official sporting event in Italy.

Khalaili’s father recently claimed Newcastle United, Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town had enquired about the player. In theory, his failed move to Italy gives those clubs the opportunity to reignite their interest.

“There were a lot of enquiries from teams,” Khalaili’s father said. “Now I’m revealing this to you because we can talk about it: Newcastle, Crystal Palace, and Ipswich, who put a €30m price tag on him to sign him, and he didn’t want to.”

Matt Targett set for Premier League move after Newcastle United exit

Matt Targett is set to remain in the Premier League following his departure from Newcastle United.

The 30-year-old left-back spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough, helping them to reach the Championship play-off final, where they lost 1-0 to Hull City at Wembley.

And it is Hull who Targett has agreed to join. According to Hull Live, the former Aston Villa defender will sign an initial two-year contract.
