Newcastle United player set for move just four days after signing - Champions League club interested

Newcastle United are set to sign Malaga youngster Antonio Cordero on July 1.

Newcastle United prodigy Antonio Cordero is reportedly wanted by Ajax on a season-long loan.

Toon chiefs beat the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona to the 18-year-old’s signature and he will officially join the club on July 1. An under-19 international with Spain, Cordero arrives as the latest youngster tipped for big things at St James’ Park.

Newcastle have made academy investment a priority since the Saudi-backed takeover in October 2021. Signing the likes of Yankuba Minteh and flipping them for a profit is a key method to alleviate PSR pressures.

Manchester City and Chelsea are the biggest proponents of selling youth players to bankroll high-profile signings. That is only, of course, they are deemed surplus to requirements for the first team.

Ajax interested in Newcastle United youngster

The Magpies believe they have a genuine prospect in Cordero who, given time, can push for a spot out wide. But talkSPORT claim his services will be better served elsewhere as the playmaker seeks regular football.

Ajax - who just missed out on the Eredivisie title - are named as a potential destination for Cordero. Ironically, the Dutch giants could be one of Newcastle’s opponents in the Champions League next season.

Antonio Cordero on move

In his first interview as a Newcastle player, Cordero outlined his ambition to strike it big at St James’ Park. He said: “It’s truly an honour to be here, truly a pleasure. I am a person who likes to aspire high.

"Why not come to one of the best places in the world to do it? It’s a big step, and that’s one of the reasons I’m here. I’m happy to do it and have a great desire to get going already.”
